    The South Dakota State University Jackrabbits compete in the NCAA Division I (Division I-AA in football) as of August 2003. With this move, the University has acquired a better understanding of its strengths and corresponding weaknesses in the area of athletics, its ability to support significant athletic programs, and its ability to implement carefully designed strategies. All of these things translate into a much more beneficial atmosphere for student athletes who desire competition, publicity, and a balance of academics and athletics. The Jackrabbit men compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, track & field, swimming, tennis and wrestling. The Jackrabbit women compete in basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, track & field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball.

    South Dakota State University is an NCAA Division I School; the football team competes at the I-AA level in the Great West Football Conference. Other teams compete as independents. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, track & field, swimming, tennis, and wrestling. Women’s sports include basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, track & field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. The sports teams are supported by a spirit squad, which includes a co-educational cheer squad and a mascot. The team nick-name is the Jackrabbits.

    Athletic facilities at South Dakota State University include a field for track & field competition, a stadium, a baseball diamond, and an 8,000 seat arena.

    Among the championships and awards that South Dakota State University has received are conference titles in men’s cross country and women’s basketball, and multiple post-season appearances by different teams and 121 All-American awards in 2003-2004.
